How do I become a member?
Becoming a member of the American Milking Shorthorn Society is easy!
Simply fill out the membership form completely and mail it to the office with the $50 fee.
Your membership includes a reduced rate for services and a subscription to The Angle, our breed publication.
A junior membership is a one-time fee of $25 and remains in effect until December 31st in the year
Are there different membership levels?
We currently offer only one type of membership.
How can my child/grandchild become a member?
Any youth interested in the Milking Shorthorn breed can become a junior member. A junior membership is a one-time fee of $25 and remains in effect until December 31st in the year the junior turns 21 years of age.
The junior organization offers activities in junior national shows, special junior recognition, and junior awards at national convention. These activities are for juniors ages 9 (as of January 1st) to age 21.

A cow I bought recently had a calf. How can I register her?
Filling out an application for registry is the first step in registering a calf. Find our Application for Registry here.
The junior organization offers activities in junior national shows, special junior rYou can name the calf whatever you choose, however, the calf will have a prefix (farm name)
on the name belonging to the breeder of the calf.
If you are registering a calf that was bred and born on your farm, you can use your farm name as the prefix. Your prefix can also be registered within the American Milking Shorthorn Society.
Registrations can also be done on our online system. Only females can be registered using the online system. If you wish to utilize the online system, please call our office (608-365-3332) for log in information.
What types of identification do I need to register my animal?
- Canadian ID (tamperproof ear tags) in lieu of tattoos; or
- Tattoo; or
- Tattoo and RFID tag(left ear); or
- Tattoo and ID (laser printed) tag (dangly tag); or
- Button tag and RFID tag (left ear)
Tags are not provided by the AMSS office. Information on ordering tags can be found here.
How do I transfer my animal to my child/grandchild?
All transfers must be sent into the AMSS office. Simply fill out the information on the back of the registration paper. Cost for transfer to a child or grandchild is included in our family transfer rate.
My cow lost her RFID tag. How can I get this fixed?
Putting a new RFID tag in her ear is the simplest fix. Call our office (608-365-3332) with the new identification number and we can reflect that on the registration papers.
I lost my registration papers and have a show this weekend. How can I get new papers?
Duplicate papers can be issued on any animal for a cost. Please call our office (608-365-3332) and we will get them to you as quickly as possible.
